She and her younger brother, Kirk, were born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Chinese immigrant parents. Her mother, Jean Zu, later held an engineering professorship at the University of Toronto. She and singer/actress Miley Cyrus both trained at Toronto's Armstrong Acting Studios.
